Implications of not including cost data in DCUCOPF simulations

My project doesn’t include a cost analysis, and for much of the technology I am modeling, cost data is not available. So I’ve simply left cost-related data fields at the default values when creating my network and externals. What are the implications of this on my DCUCOPF simulations? Anything in particular I should be aware of?

Great question, @smeloney.

First, I would recommend you read the discussion in this post, specifically pay close attention to the discussion of degeneracy.

With no cost data at all, any dispatch will be “optimal” from the perspective of the objective function.

If there are many possible degenerate solutions for your model with cost data, I would recommend you add some small cost numbers for the different technologies in your system based on how you would expect these generators to dispatch. For example, if you would expect generation from PV to be preferred over SMR, you should set the VOMPrice of each to arbitrary values that specify a “ranked dispatch” (e.g., PV VOMPrice = 1 $/kWh; SMR VOMPrice = 2 $/kWh.
